camera movement

Cinematography The physical movement of the camera while recording — rotating it in place, transporting the body through space, or raising and lowering it — used to reframe, follow action, or reveal space within a continuous shot. A dolly shot that tracks alongside a walking character keeps them in frame while the background slides past, conveying travel through space.

Equipment By extension, the family of equipment that enables such motion — the tripod head, dolly, crane, jib, Steadicam, gimbal, and related supports.
Rotation on a fixed point
The simplest movements pivot the camera without moving its position. A pan rotates the camera horizontally about a vertical axis; a tilt rotates it vertically about a horizontal axis. Both are typically executed with a tripod head — a friction or fluid head that damps the motion for an even sweep. Panning and tilting change what the frame points at while the camera itself stays put, and are commonly used to follow a subject across a static setup or to survey a space. Because only the viewing angle changes, the spatial relationship between foreground and background does not shift, distinguishing rotation from movements that transport the camera through space.
Moving through space
A dolly shot (or tracking shot) transports the whole camera, usually on a wheeled dolly running on rails or on a smooth floor, moving it toward, away from, or alongside the subject. Because the viewpoint itself relocates, near and far objects shift relative to one another — the parallax that reads as genuine three-dimensional movement. A crane or jib mounts the camera on a counterweighted arm, allowing it to rise, descend, and arc through the air, often combining vertical and lateral motion in one continuous move. These supports trade portability for smoothness and repeatability, and are frequently used to open or close a scene by revealing or withdrawing from its setting.
Stabilized and handheld work
Holding the camera in the hands or on the shoulder frees it to move anywhere but introduces the operator’s own unsteadiness, which registers as visible shake. The Steadicam, introduced in the 1970s, isolates the camera on a spring-and- gimbal harness worn by the operator, allowing walking and running shots with the fluidity of a dolly but without track. Motorized gimbals achieve comparable stabilization electronically, using motors driven by motion sensors to hold the camera level. Handheld operation, by contrast, transmits the operator’s motion to the frame and is used in some styles for that unsteady, reactive appearance. The selection among these methods is treated as part of cinematography.
Movement versus the zoom
An optical zoom changes the focal length of a lens during a shot, enlarging or reducing the image without moving the camera. Although a zoom and a dolly can both make a subject grow larger in frame, they are not equivalent: a dolly changes the camera’s position and therefore the perspective, so relative sizes and parallax between planes shift, whereas a zoom magnifies a fixed viewpoint and leaves those spatial relationships unchanged. Combining the two in opposite directions — dollying in while zooming out, or the reverse — produces the effect in which the subject holds its size while the background appears to expand or compress.
