film gauge

Definition
Film gauge is the width of a strip of photographic film, expressed in millimeters. Because width largely determines how large each frame can be, the gauge also names the overall format: filmmakers speak of shooting “on 16” or “on 35” to mean not only the physical width but the associated frame size, equipment, and workflow. A larger gauge exposes a larger area of emulsion per frame, which raises the potential resolution and tonal detail of the recorded image.
Standard gauges
The standardized gauges range widely in size and cost.
- 8 mm and Super 8: The smallest common gauges, used historically for home movies and amateur work. Super 8, introduced in 1965, keeps the 8 mm width but uses smaller perforations, enlarging the usable frame area relative to standard (“Regular”) 8 mm.
- 16 mm and Super 16: A mid-range gauge long associated with documentary, news, television, and independent production. Super 16 exposes into the area normally reserved for a soundtrack on one edge, yielding a wider frame better suited to widescreen aspect ratios.
- 35 mm: The long-standing standard for theatrical motion pictures, offering a balance of image quality, cost, and infrastructure that made it the dominant professional gauge for over a century.
- 65/70 mm: The largest common gauge, used for large-format cinematography. Film is exposed on 65 mm negative and printed on 70 mm stock, the extra width carrying soundtrack information. IMAX runs 65/70 mm film horizontally through the camera, so each frame spans a still larger area of the stock.
Perforations
Along one or both edges, film carries perforations (sprocket holes) that the camera and projector engage to advance the strip frame by frame and to register each frame precisely in the gate. The number, shape, and pitch of perforations per frame are part of a gauge’s specification and help distinguish formats that share a nominal width, such as standard 8 mm and Super 8. The area occupied by perforations, and any space reserved for a soundtrack, reduces the width available for the image, which is why formats like Super 8 and Super 16 enlarge the frame by reclaiming edge space.
Trade-offs
Gauge involves a trade-off among image quality, cost, and portability. A wider gauge exposes a larger frame, recording more detail and requiring less magnification for projection, which reduces the apparent visibility of grain and supports higher resolution and larger projected images. It also consumes more film per second and requires bulkier, costlier cameras and stock. Narrower gauges use less film and are more portable, at the expense of image detail. The proportions of the exposed frame, together with any masking or anamorphic compression applied to it, determine the aspect ratio presented to the viewer, so a single gauge can be used to produce images of several different shapes.
