Functional roles
Lighting for the camera is commonly organized by the function each source serves rather than by its fixture. The key light is the principal source, establishing the dominant direction and the depth of the shadows. The fill light raises the level in those shadows, lowering the contrast between the lit and unlit sides of a subject; the ratio between key and fill is one measure of a scene’s contrast. The back light (or rim light) is placed behind the subject, opposite the camera, to edge the outline with light and separate the subject from the background.
Together these constitute the three-point setup, a conventional starting arrangement in which key, fill, and back light are positioned around the subject. Additional sources — a background light, a practical fixture visible in the frame, an eye light — extend the scheme. The arrangement is descriptive of roles: a single source can serve more than one function, and many setups depart from three points entirely.
Qualities of light
Light is described by several independent properties. Its quality ranges from hard to soft: a small source relative to the subject casts sharp, well-defined shadows, while a large or diffused source casts gradual, soft-edged shadows. Softness is increased by enlarging the apparent source — through diffusion material, reflection off a broad surface, or moving the source closer.
Direction is the angle from which light strikes the subject — front, side, top, back, or below — which determines where shadows fall and how surface texture is revealed. Intensity is the amount of light reaching the subject, governed by the source’s output and by the inverse-square relationship between distance and illuminance. These qualities operate together: a source has a direction, a hardness, and an intensity at once.
Color temperature
The color of a light source is described by its color temperature, expressed in kelvin (K), corresponding to the color of light emitted by an idealized blackbody radiator at that temperature. Lower values appear warmer (more red or orange) and higher values cooler (more blue). Tungsten lighting is conventionally rated near 3200 K, while average daylight is near 5600 K. Sources are matched to one another and to the recording medium’s white balance so that neutral tones record as neutral; deliberate mismatches introduce a color cast, relating lighting directly to the reproduction of color.
Common fixtures
Fixtures are grouped by how they generate light. Tungsten lamps are incandescent sources that produce warm light near 3200 K and are dimmable but convert much of their energy to heat. HMI (hydrargyrum medium-arc iodide) lamps are arc-discharge units that emit daylight-balanced light at high output and efficiency, and are common where daylight color is required. Fluorescent fixtures produce diffuse, relatively cool-running light and are available in tubes balanced for tungsten or daylight. LED fixtures, now widespread, are energy-efficient and often adjustable in both intensity and color temperature, with some capable of producing a range of hues.
The choice and placement of fixtures determines the light that reaches the sensor or film, and thus interacts directly with exposure — the overall amount of light recorded — and with the framing and movement decisions of cinematography.
