photographic emulsion

The light-sensitive layer of film: microscopic silver-halide crystals suspended in gelatin, in which exposure forms a latent image.

  1. Chemistry A suspension of light-sensitive silver-halide crystals — silver bromide, chloride, or iodide — in gelatin, coated in a thin layer onto a film base.

  2. Process The layer in which exposure to light creates a latent image: a few reduced silver atoms per struck crystal, later amplified enormously by development.

The emulsion is where a photograph physically happens. Despite the name it is not an emulsion in the strict chemical sense but a suspension: countless microscopic crystals of silver halide held in a thin, clear layer of gelatin.

The latent image

When a photon is absorbed by a silver-halide crystal, it frees an electron that reduces a silver ion to a single neutral silver atom. A crystal that absorbs several photons accumulates a small cluster of silver atoms — too few to see, but enough to mark that crystal as exposed. This invisible pattern is the latent image.

Development and amplification

Development is chemical amplification. A developer preferentially reduces the entire crystal to metallic silver wherever a latent-image cluster exists, multiplying the original signal by a factor on the order of a billion; unexposed crystals are left alone. Fixing then dissolves away the remaining light-sensitive halide, so the developed silver image is stable in daylight.

Grain, speed, and resolution

The size of the crystals governs a fundamental trade-off. Larger grains catch light more readily — higher sensitivity (film speed, ISO) — but are individually visible as grain and resolve less fine detail. Smaller grains are slower but finer. In color film, the developed silver is replaced during processing by dyes formed at each of three emulsion layers sensitized to blue, green, and red — but the light-catching mechanism is the same silver-halide crystal described here.
